“Write a lot and hit the streets. A writer who doesn't keep up with what's out there ain't gonna be out there.”

Toni Cade Bambara

Karibu Nyumbani!

I'm a Kenyan American journalist born-and-raised in the hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. I grew up among a whole lot of trees, granola people, and an enclave of African, Caribbean and Asian immigrants.

I made sense of the world I lived in primarily through art, sports, and the Internet. I never intended to become a journalist, but it has become the clearest way for me to communicate across the multiple spaces I move through. I value the trust everyday people instill in me to tell their story right, and I always aim to do so accurately and fairly.

When it was time for me to get out of New England, I came to Detroit, a city and a people that I had grown to appreciate through conference trips, Dilla, and Black labor activism.

When I'm not on deadline, you can find me gardening, chilling at the library, or making weird sounds on my trumpet.
